Start writing after time away from the keyboard

A holiday sunset

Are you struggling to start writing after a long time away from the keyboard (or notebook)? Can you figure out why? It isn’t writer’s block.

There are 3 things that you do to motivate yourself. 3 things that lead to real, tangible outcomes.

Here’s what you do.
  1. Give yourself a target.
  2. Make yourself accountable.
  3. Reward your successes.

You want examples? Fine. Take my current experience of being stuck. Not being able to write anything and not feeling like writing anything led to me feeling sorry for myself. It follows a holiday trip around Norfolk, which was really lovely and relaxing. Unfortunately, having no way (or desire) to write when I was on holiday means that now I am back, it is proving really difficult to start writing once more.

So, rather than stare at the screen for hours with nothing happening in front of me, I decided to follow my guidelines above and come up with an actionable plan for myself.

Here’s what I’m going to do.
  1. Target: commit to doing NanoWriMo this year. 50,000 words in a month. A book in a month.
  2. Accountability: I’m telling my fiance. I’m telling my family. By logging onto my Nanowrimo account I’ll get active in the forums. I’m thinking about doing a Youtube vlog. People will be expecting me to do this
  3. Reward: When I’m done I’m going to buy myself a new Xbox game (Battlefield 1) and play it more than I’ve ever played anything in the world ever.

That’s the plan so that’s what I’m going to do.

Shit. Now I’ve got to do it.

*UPDATE* I managed to do it! It was hard work, and took a lot of energy, but it was worth it! My first book, The Unjudged, will be on Amazon later in 2017! In fact, I was so excited about actually finishing the book, I didn’t bother buying the game! Which has meant more blog posts (sorry!).
